Nelly Topa   LCMHCA, LCASA, NCC

Adolescents & Adults Counselor

My name is Nelly Topa & I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) and a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist Associate (LCASA) at DRG Counseling.

I earned my undergraduate degree in Psychology and Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and obtained my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health and Addictions Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

I strongly believe that to engender the most effective healing path for any individual, counselors must be cognizant of the unique needs and backgrounds of their clients. Given this, I view every client as a complex, multidimensional and ever-changing cultural being and provide services that are in line with this philosophy.

Our lives consist of cognitive, physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual components, which is why my primary approach to counseling is an integration of techniques from a wide array of theoretical frameworks. While the majority of the techniques used in my practice stem from a cognitive behavioral philosophy, I may also utilize concepts from acceptance and commitment, solutions-focused, dialectical-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and existential models of counseling. In addition to more traditional counseling techniques, I also utilize experiential therapies to help you work through distress and heal in creative ways.

I also believe that the quality of the therapeutic relationship plays a prominent role in achieving positive treatment outcomes, which is why I dedicate a great deal of time to ensuring that our relationship is built upon honesty and trust. During our time together we will work collaboratively towards long-lasting change that will allow you to live a more healthy, balanced, and meaningful life. I strongly believe that you possess the strength and power within yourself to enact the necessary change and healing in your life and that my role is to help you discover these qualities and learn how to use them to your benefit.
